Meet our Bioethics Faculty Scholars

Whitny Braun is the Program Director for the M.A in Bioethics and an Assistant Professor of Ethics at Loma Linda University. Dr. Braun’s research has focused on religious suicide including the Jain practice of Sallekhana and the Parsi practice of Dakhmenashini.

David Choojian is the Chair of the Ethics Consultation Service at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Loma Linda University's School of Medicine, and works as a Pulmonologist at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System Dr. Chooljian specializes in medical ethics and has written on topics pertaining to critical care.

Dr. Dubov is an Associate Professor of Behavioral Health and Bioethics at Loma Linda University. He is also an Instructor in Public Health at Loma Linda University. Dr. Dubov earned his PhD in Health Care Ethics from Duquesne University, where his thesis investigated, “Emotions, intuitions, and risk perception in critical care.” His current interests include HIV prevention and health disparities, as well as end-of-life care and decision-making.

Yi Shen Ma is an Assistant Professor of Religion and Ethical Studies at Loma Linda University. His areas of interest include social ethics, Christian theology, and the intersection of political theory.

Dr. Namm is Director of Clinical Ethics at Loma Linda University Health. He is also Program Director of the General Surgery Residency and an Assistant Professor of Surgery. Dr. Namm specializes in surgical oncology and surgical ethics.

Grace Oei is Associate Director of the Center for Christian Bioethics at Loma Linda University. She is the Medical Director for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for the Riverside University Health System and an Attending Physician in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care for Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. She is also Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Dr. Oei works as a Pediatric Intensivist and Certified Clinical Ethics Consultant. Dr. Oei specializes in the ethics of neonatal care and is a regular speaker for medical, bioethical, and religious conferences.

Zdravko Plantak is presently a Professor of Religion and Ethics in the School of Religion at Loma Linda University. He has focused on the ethics of human rights in general as well as race, gender equality, and poverty in a global context.

James Walters is an Assistant Professor of Ethics at Loma Linda University. He has presented at multiple professional and religious conferences on a variety of ethical issues including aging, human cloning, organ transplantation, end-of-life care and decision-making, abortion, and many other sensitive topics.

Gerald R. Winslow is Research Professor of Religion at Loma Linda University (LLU), and Founding Director of the Institute for Health Policy and Leadership. His research focuses on Adventist bioethics and will continue to coordinate the ongoing development of the Adventist Bioethics Consortium. His expertise in biomedical ethics has been appreciated in lectures throughout North America, Australia, Europe, Russia, Africa, and Asia.
